In conversations, I’ve heard people refer to their joblessness in a variety of colorful ways.
There’s the standard, “I’m unemployed.” But there seems to be a negative stigma surrounding that term.
Then there’s the, “I just got laid off.” A little less blunt than “unemployed,” but still quite the bummer.
But then there’s the more intriguing, “I left.” As in, “Since I left the company, I’ve been able to catch up on some reading and animal husbandry.”
That’s a clever one, because it conveys the general vibe that you’ve been laid off, but puts it in a less “pity me” context, I think.
Sure, it’s a matter of semantics. But as long as we’re in this recession, we might as well endure it on our terms.
And yes, that’s a picture from Speed.
