Last night’s episode of 30 Rock beautifully incorporated the financial crisis, putting New York City in an armageddon-like panic following the collapse of the Asian markets.
During Tracy Jordan’s appearance on Larry King Live, there’s breaking news that the Asian markets are in a tailspin. Larry then asks Tracy about his take on the situation, and Tracy warns that it’s time to panic like it’s the last night on Earth. To quote him more precisely, it’s time for people to “freak their geek.”
The ensuing chaos that rips through NYC makes for some great comedy and, obviously, social commentary, with people flocking to believe a guy who has no financial credibility whatsoever.
But the money shot comes when the NBC executives pop in a recorded message (only for use in the event of an emergency) from their boss, General Electric CEO Don Geiss.
Rather than panic, Geiss urges calm. “Avoid The ‘Noid,” he says, adding, “Go to your loved ones, hold them close. If it is the end, love is all that matters.”
Agreed.
